Dear Parents,
We want to thank all our families who joined us for our Back to School movie night. I hope everyone enjoyed the treats and time to socialize as much as I did. That is what our family nights are all about, a chance to bring our school family together and get to know each other a little better. I send a special thank you to our wonderful PTO who sponsors our family nights and works tirelessly to make school fun. I encourage each of you to support their annual fundraiser by contributing items to the school baskets for the silent auction or providing candy for the Trunk or Treat Event.
On October 8th we will be presenting our first monthly Character Counts Awards. You will be invited by a phone call from the classroom teacher to attend this assembly if your child will be honored this month. Character traits are all the aspects of a person’s behavior and attitudes that make up that person’s personality. Everyone has character traits, good and bad. At Merryhill we focus on the “good traits”. This month our focus has been on Responsibility – a person of character meets the demands of duty, is accountable, pursues excellence, and exercises self-control. Each month we will focus on a different trait which is always posted on the front bulletin board as you enter the main lobby. Every staff member may award students a “character paw” posted on this board and at the end of the month the child’s classroom teacher will select the student to be honored at the monthly assembly. You can help support this program by praising your child when they earn a “paw” and encouraging them by looking at the board when you visit the school.
Parent/Teacher communication is an essential factor for a student to be successful in school. You recently received a student progress report. This report is not part of the student’s permanent record but rather a tool of communication between the teacher and you. The purpose of this report is to help you guide your child in areas they may need improvement. On November 2nd we will have our first Parent/Teacher Conference of the year. The report card provides a limited amount of information, and we recognize you may need more of the total picture for you to work with your child. Conferences give parents a chance to ask questions about the student’s learning and classroom expectations. It is an opportunity to exchange information about your child that may assist the teacher to work more effectively with the student. This is a time to resolve concerns, and most importantly, a time to celebrate successes.
It is a privilege to work with your children. I learn from them. I love to see their excitement for learning and share in their joy as they meet new challenges each day. Please know my door is always open to you or feel free to call anytime.
Sincerely,
Theresa Gotay, Principal
