Fostering Character and Social-Emotional Learning at Merryhill Midtown School

At Merryhill Midtown School, we are proud to incorporate our FIERCE Character program and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into every aspect of our students’ education. Our commitment to developing well-rounded individuals goes beyond academics; we prioritize the development of strong character traits that will serve our students well beyond their time with us.

Throughout the year, students are introduced to a variety of character traits, including kindness, patience, responsibility, compassion, innovative thinking, and fearlessness, among others. These traits are not just taught but actively practiced, with students given numerous opportunities to apply them in their daily lives.

Our dedicated teachers and staff play a crucial role in implementing the FIERCE Character program into their lessons and cultivating a school-wide culture that embodies these values. They integrate character education into their teaching practices, ensuring that students are not only learning about these traits but also seeing them modeled in their daily interactions. Students have weekly SEL lessons from our school counselor and have opportunities to reflect on their own character development throughout the week.

To celebrate and reinforce these efforts, we host weekly raffles, monthly awards, and operate the Mustang Market, where students can redeem Mustang Money they’ve earned for demonstrating these FIERCE traits. These incentives not only recognize and reward FIERCE character but also encourage students to continue practicing these traits both at school and in the community.

At Merryhill Midtown School, we believe that character development is just as important as academic achievement. By integrating our FIERCE Character program and SEL into our curriculum and school culture, we are preparing our students to be Fearless, Innovative, Enthusiastic, Responsible, Compassionate, and Enlightened individuals who will make a positive impact in the world around them.
