Welcome to Merryhill Durango Physical Education & Wellness
Aloha! My name is Rylan Nakahata and I am the Physical & Health Education Teacher at Merryhill Durango.
I am originally from the island of Oahu, Hawaii, but relocated to the Las Vegas area in 2007. I studied Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences at UNLV and have many years experience in the field of physical therapy and rehabilitation.
I now reside in Las Vegas with my wife and son (7) and pet cat and dog. I enjoy watching all sports and enjoy nature and the outdoors and hitting the gym. My favorite sports teams are the Los Angeles Angels (MLB), Vegas Golden Knights (NHL), and UNLV and University of Hawaii athletics.
I have teaching at Merryhill School Durango since 2021.

Welcome Back to the 2024-2025 School Year!
I am excited to fulfill another year of active learning with our students at Merryhill Durango.
This year, our curriculum will collaborate with the C.A.S.E.L. program for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). These lessons will focus on the students’ whole-self learning, and encourage a positive development in SEL. When implemented both within and outside of the classrooms, the program develops skills in 1) self-management 2) self-awareness 3) responsible decision-making 4) relationship skills 5) social awareness

We will be: Exploring a foundation of physical activity and motor skills thru exercise, Introducing teamwork and cooperation with team sports, Explaining the different food groups, Demonstrating positive communication and problem solving skills. And having fun!
2nd thru 4th Grades:
Continued exploration into: Physical and emotional wellness, Improving teamwork and sportsmanship skills, MyPlate and daily nutrition guidelines, Practicing healthy eating habits and social behaviors. And staying active!
5th thru 8th Grades:
Students will display: Leadership skills and sense of school community pride, Knowledge of healthy lifestyle choices and positive mind-and-body connection, Understanding of health risks and avoidance of unhealthy choices, How to be mindful of one another.
