Ms. Emily Suellau - Second Grade

Hello, Second Grade Families!

In Second Grade we are working on:

  • Asking and answering “who?”, “what?”, “where?”, “when?”, “why?”, and “how?” questions to show understanding of key details in a text.
  • Showing how and why rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, and repeated lines are used in songs and poetry.
  • Comparing and contrasting two or more versions of the same story (e.g. Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.
  • Identifying the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.
  • Describing the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
  • Recounting stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determining their central message, lesson, or moral.

  • Extending understanding of base-ten notation/place value.
  • Learning strategies for and building fluency with addition and subtraction.
  • Using and understanding standard units of measurement.
  • Describing and analyzing shapes.

  • Understanding the importance of individual action and character, and explaining how heroes from the past have made a difference in others’ lives.
  • Understanding basic economic concepts and individual roles in the economy.
  • Explaining governmental institutions and practices in the United States and other countries.

  • Understanding that plants and animals have predictable life cycles, and how they interact.
  • Understanding that Earth is made of materials with distinct properties and uses, and how these materials can change.
  • Understanding the basics of the scientific method and how to use it.

… and so much more!

Teacher Info:

I graduated from UC Santa Cruz, majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Astrophysics. I also have associate degrees from American River College in General Science, Social Science, English Literature and Communication (and more!). I have been in education for 10 years. I spent years as a classroom teacher, and later as director of a tutoring center doing work in intervention and educational advocacy. I love all subjects but I am especially excited to teach animal science! In my free time, I enjoy backpacking, listening to live music, and reading my favorite author Octavia E. Butler.
