My name is Linda Poteat, and I am one of the Second Grade teachers. The 2022-2023 term is my 16th year as part of the Merryhill family.
My goal this year is Optimal Student Learning. This will be achieved when the adults at school, working as a village, consistently implement a combination of classroom and school wide practices that support our children’s academic, social, and emotional growth.
I will use technology daily to bring the world to the classroom and create priceless learning opportunities. In Second Grade we move away from teaching skills in isolation and work to integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening with Project Based Learning. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.
It is important that my students have the skills to collaborate, create, communicate, and think critically. The children will have multiple opportunities to explain their new understanding of concepts to others.
We will continue to focus on “The 7 Happy Habits,” our character development program that you all know and love. This year we are excited to explore a new program for Language Arts called Into Reading. It includes high-quality books that intrigue and challenge the children. We will empower students to pursue their natural curiosity and discover their interests. As they build a strong foundation in academics, they will develop a confidence in themselves that ensures lifelong learners emerge.
Our science program will prepare students to meet the Next Generation Science Standards that integrates STEM education with digital and hands-on exploration kits. I know our students will enjoy the interactive and innovative learning designed into this new program.
We will work as a team to ensure your child will have a very successful second grade year. Please feel free to contact me at (408) 254-1282 or email me at Linda.Poteat@merryhillschool.com.
